Various stories have happened in quarries from all over the world. The history, transformation and development of quarries have given more stories to this wonderful space. Let's have a look at the wonderful transformation of the quarry in the hands of designers.
01 Carrières de Lumières
Carrières de Lumières is located on the blue coast of Provence and provides white marble for many French castles and Citédes Baux.
However, in 1935, the economic competition of modern materials led to the closure of this generation of quarries.
Fortunately, in 1959, director Jean Gukdo found this dusty pearl and completed his last film, The Will of Orpheus.
This also became the beginning of the transformation of Carrières de Lumières to the art field.
Since then, Carri è res de Lumi è res has been permanently opened to the public and has gradually become a stage for art, history and fashion exhibitions.
The simple and elegant space, which has been carved by nature for thousands of years, together with the avant-garde art of fashion trend, brings visitors a unique visual experience in collision and integration.
In the Karala Spa competition, a work named "Lost Scenery" led us to unlock another possibility for the reconstruction of the quarry.
The project plans a hot spring in the gap of the quarry. Through the minimalist design language, it is a dialogue between man and nature.
In the big cold rocks, the hot spring water flows slowly, and the water mist is transpiration to feel the nature of the world, which is both a relaxing and ultimate aesthetic experience.
Without too much manual decoration, the original style and features of the quarry are retained to the maximum extent. Write a new poem in this "forgotten" corner.
03 Anthropophagic Territory
There is such a special quarry in the slum of Rio de Janeiro. Its location forms a big crack from the ground up.
As a graduating student, the designer hopes to build a community cooperative for the residents of slums through this project.
In this way, the society will pay more attention to slums.
Due to the special location of the quarry, the designer carved a series of spaces in the opening and the area close to the surface.
The upper part is the design space, open-air museum and office, and the lower part is the excavation site.
The excavated waste is also processed for 3D printing, bringing more benefits to residents and improving their living standards.
The designer made reasonable use of the huge gap and created a vertical space full of layers with ingenuity, creating a dreamy visual effect.
Mares Quarry, located on the Spanish island of Balearimenoca, dates back to the 1930s.
Before it was abandoned, it was taken over by the army and used as a fort.
Because of its unique texture, they were deeply moved, so they decided to build this forgotten place into an isolated holiday home.
The designer first projected millions of laser spots on the wrinkles on the stone surface through laser 3D scanning technology.
The scanning results of the existing solid structures are recorded with millimeter accuracy for later polishing and regeneration.
Because mining at different times makes the space full of layers, it is particularly important to divide appropriate functional space according to the terrain.
In order to preserve the original and natural feeling of the space as much as possible, the designer cast the space with sodium silicate minerals.
This material has enough porosity to clean and smear the stone, while retaining its surface texture and original feeling.
Of course, the transformation will also fill the space form through "addition", so there will also be some artificial stones in the space, which complement each other.
The living space is located in the existing rock strata left over a century ago. The kitchen, dining area and bedroom are available to meet daily needs.
The home at night is quiet and mysterious, as if living in caves in ancient times.
The translucent panel partition is made of plastic sheets like glass bricks, which can filter the light in the space and make the interior warm and soft.
The blasted patio can just create a small scene, and plant a tree on the falling rock to let "life seep into the rock".
The whole home is like a "surprise" unearthed from archaeological relics, a house embedded in nature.
The designer named it ca'n terra, which means "the house of the earth".
Because it perfectly maintains the balance between nature and man, history and times, and people and the environment.
In the Ca 'n Terra project, the designer explored the tension between structures, places and substances by precise technical means. A space abandoned for nearly a century was saved from the river of time.
05 Jinyun Quarry
Of course, in addition to foreign mine transformation, China also has its own mine transformation, and has given new functions and life forms.
Jinyun County in Zhejiang has a long history of quarrying. The combination of continuous manual digging and natural wind and rain carving for thousands of years has formed large stone caves.
But there is no escape from abandonment. Quarries were forgotten in the tide of the times, and occasionally several caves were used to raise chickens, fish, etc.
The rocks here have unforgettable volcanic rock formations and other strange natural landscapes, but they are not displayed in an attractive way.
So the team of DnA architectural design firm was entrusted to reconstruct 9 of the more than 3000 small abandoned quarries in the area.
In the process of exploration, we found a huge space accidentally formed when quarrying, like a cathedral, which is as high as 38m and has a good echo effect.
Therefore, the place has been transformed into a traditional Wu Opera or a display space.
A quarry with water surface is used for cultural communication, where tourists can learn about local history, plants and animals.
In addition to the new site of social and cultural infrastructure, the project also tries to create the possibility of economic development.
Nine quarries are connected with a small village through a valley.
Today's quarry is no longer a scar in the natural landscape, but a relic shaped by heavy physical labor has become a symbol of economic and cultural transformation in rural areas.
At the same time, it will also improve the local socio-economic and ecological environment.
06 MARMOR III
Marmor III proposes to strategically reuse these abandoned Marmor quarries, with a number of houses built from the middle to the top of the abandoned quarries.
By transforming each quarry, a sculptural and unique architectural combination is created. A part of new caves have been excavated on the basis of the original terrain to realize the combination of the old and the new.
The architectural method is between architecture and nature. It is the expression of living in primitive and modern diversified buildings.
Epilogue
Stone mines build a dreamy and lonely world in unknown corners, which is strange and unparalleled. Through the ingenious work of architects, this unique beauty is shown to more people, which not only brings us a visual feast, but also adds a temperature and new idea to the loneliness of the millennium, providing new possibilities for our future design.
