When the design team began to transform public toilets, is it a dream remodeler or a rollover site

图片

Gathering the best designers in the country together and asking them to renovate public toilets? Such a bold idea, only the Japanese dare. In the streets of Shibuya district in Tokyo, Japan, one can often see some eye-catching or strange small houses, and yes, these are pictures of public toilets图片

图片

The Tokyo Toliet (Tokyo Public Toilet) project was launched by The Nippon Foundation (an international charity) and the Tokyo Shibuya ward government. The organizers invited 16 of Japan's most famous designers, including Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, and other masters, in the hope that the masters' designs will break the public's bad experience of public toilets being "dimly lit, smelly, and dirty. The design of the masters is expected to break the bad experience of "dim lighting, stinky and dirty" of public toilets.

图片

Now 17 public toilet renovation projects have been completed 12, I look at the master design of public toilets, frankly speaking, clean is clean, but not every designer is suitable for the design of public toilets, in the end, how, take a look at.

Tadao Ando: let public toilets become the landscape

The public toilet designed by Tadao Ando is located in Jingu-dori Park and is a gray building with a cylindrical shape. From the appearance alone, it is indeed, very "Ando".

图片

He is known as the "poet of fair-faced concrete" and has created nearly 150 internationally renowned architectural works, winning a series of world architectural awards, including the Pritzker Prize, which is known as the "Nobel Prize" in architecture.

图片He is best at using concrete as the main material of architecture, with a simple and clear style, focusing on the inner connection between people, architecture and nature. However, this public toilet Tadao Ando did not make his usual concrete building, but used a lot of metal material, under the cover of green trees, presenting a serene and poetic temperament.

图片

This work by Tadao Ando has two levels of space from the outside to the inside, with the toilet space planned in the middle, with a circular wall and a grille around the outside like the "edge side" of traditional Japanese architecture. It not only bridges the inner and outer space, but also brings the sunlight, wind and greenery of the outdoors into the interior, while protecting the privacy and safety of the toilet users.

图片

The top of the building is designed like a brim, which is a "canopy" specially designed by Tadao Ando to protect passersby from the rain and snow, and this work is named "Amayadori" (rain shelter).

图片

Talking about his inspiration, Tadao Ando said, "It was crucial for me to interweave the flat and wide canopy with the openwork louvered facade to create a circular corridor where people can feel the light and comfortable air around them even after they enter." He hopes the small building will transcend the boundaries of public restrooms and become part of the urban landscape, providing great public value.

Kengo Kuma: Forest Trail or Primitive Thatch

This public toilet designed by Kengo Kuma has a familiar flavor. It is an area surrounded by wood and lush trees and greenery. If I didn't say it was a public toilet designed by Kengo Kuma, I would have thought it was an outhouse that people built themselves a long time ago.
图片

图片

Kengo Kuma's architecture is mostly a blend of classical and modern styles, and he specializes in designing with natural elements such as stone, bamboo and wood, emphasizing the integration of architecture and nature, and even "making architecture disappear".

图片

He designed this public toilet, which apparently also uses a lot of natural elements. This public toilet is called "Forest Trail" and is located in Nabeshima Songtao Park, with 240 Yoshino cedar pieces covering the building in a natural and primitive way.

图片

Although the façade looks somewhat primitive, the focus of Kuma's design is on the division of space inside. Kuma believes that so far there is little difference in the design of public toilets, so this time he did not simply divide the design into two toilets for men and women, but took into account the more varied needs of the people.

Using different equipment and spatial layouts, he designed five huts with different functions, including men's and women's toilets, baby-sitting rooms, dressing and changing rooms, and toilets for the handicapped.

图片

The interior of the space is also decorated with a lot of wood on the walls that can be recycled and reused, unifying the atmosphere from the inside out.

图片 图片 图片

Although it looks very much like the original outhouse, it must be said that Kuma has thoughtfully considered many needs that were overlooked by the designers.

Shigeru Ban: "Transparent" toilets, can you believe it?

Designing toilets to be transparent? I wouldn't dare to do that in my own home! But the famous Japanese designer Shigeru Ban, on the public toilet into a "transparent", just ask you dare to use it!图片

图片

Shigeru Ban, who won the Pritzker Prize for Architecture back in 2014, emphasizes the social responsibility an architect should have more than the beauty and style of his buildings.

图片

Therefore, he often uses cheap and easily available materials such as cardboard tubes, bamboo and glass in his designs, which can be recycled. Shigeru Ban is also known for his boldness in using the cheapest and most fragile materials. In 2006, he designed the new pavilion of the Centre Pompidou in France with a Chinese bamboo hat, which stood out from 153 other competitors; during the great earthquake in Kobe, Japan, he built a paper tube church for the victims who lost their homes in just one day; he also proposed the idea of replacing steel and concrete with a faxed paper tube core, and in 2008, when the Wenchuan earthquake occurred, he participated in the international post-disaster reconstruction ......

图片

This time to participate in the Tokyo public toilet project, he also adhered to the usual concept, glass as the main material to build two public toilets. The glass is specially customized electronically controlled dimming glass, when the dimming glass is turned off, the liquid crystal molecules inside will show irregular dispersion state, the glass is opaque at this time; similarly, when the power is turned on, the glass can become transparent.

图片

In the design, the switch of the toilet is used to control the power. As long as someone enters the toilet and locks the door, the translucent glass will become opaque, fully protecting the privacy of the user.

图片

The original idea of designing "transparent public toilets" was that Shigeru Ban thought of two reasons why people hate public toilets: one is the fear of seeing a dirty and messy environment when they push the door open, and the other is the fear that there will be bad people in such dark corners. In order to solve these two problems, Shigeru Ban boldly adopted the "translucent" toilet scheme.

图片

When the public toilet is empty, the stained glass gives an unobstructed view of the inside of the public toilet, so that people who want to use the toilet can stand outside and all their worries can be dispelled. When entering the interior of the public toilet, the glass turns opaque, effectively protecting privacy. At the same time, the glass walls will return to transparency in 30 minutes after someone enters in order to prevent unexpected situations such as users fainting or passing out inside.

图片 图片

This length also caused some controversy on the network, but this time can still be adjusted subsequently, and is not too big a problem. I am more worried that if the electric adjustment system is wrong, there may be a little trouble.

图片

图片However, this "transparent" public toilet program sounds outrageous at first glance, but it is actually safer!

Nahor Tamura: Origami Heart

She is not an architect, but a designer in many fields, from furniture, lamps, decorations to watches and exhibitions. The Momento lamp, a water drop about to fall, was designed by her

图片

She has won awards such as IF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, and Industrial Design Excellence Award, and is known as the most favored goddess of product design nowadays.

图片

The organizers invited Naho Tamura to design the public toilet in the hope that she could have more play and imagination. The public toilet designed by Naho Tamura is located in a long and narrow space next to the railway track, so there is not much space to play with, but her design is refreshing. The red façade design stands out on the street, and the triangular origami-like shape makes several spaces independent of each other and connected to each other.

图片

图片The location of this public toilet by Naho Tamura will welcome people from different countries during the Tokyo Olympics, and even though it is a public toilet, it should ensure that each individual has their own, private and safe space when using it. The designer hopes that her design will give people a sense of security and independence when they are inside.

图片

图片

At the same time, in Japanese culture, origami is often used as a gift, and she hopes that the shape of origami can reflect "hospitality", so that everyone who comes to Japan can feel friendly.

图片

In addition to these four designs, there are other public toilet designs in this project.

Concrete wall toilet designed by Masahiro Katayama

图片

From the perspective of design itself, not every one of these public toilets is worthy of praise and will not immediately change people's stereotype of public toilets as dirty, messy and poor, but these small buildings, which look either weird or artistic, bring another possibility to the design of public toilets in the city.

It shows us that good design can make dirty and messy become high.

Perhaps, in the near future, public toilets can also become a pleasing place to the eyes.
