According to reports, Quentin is already preparing to make his tenth film as a director, and the film, tentatively titled "The Movie Critic" , is also likely to be his "last" work. Fans familiar with Quentin probably know that he has always insisted that he has a limited number of films to direct, and that he will choose to retire after 10 films (the two Kill Bill films count as one).

Quentin Tarantino, a director full of controversy and personality, has become an important figure in the film industry with his unique film style and in-depth knowledge of film culture. His filmography is full of homage and innovation to classic cinema, leading the way.

图片

Quentin has seen at least 7,000 movies while working at a video rental store, and is known as the Video Guy. Here, let's explore 20 of Quentin Tarantino's favorite films and learn more about his taste in movies and his unique perspective on them.

01

"Taxi Driver" (1976)

Director: Martin Scorsese

图片

Quentin Tarantino loves and often recommends the films of Martin Scorsese, especially Scorsese's "Taxi Driver", shot in 1976. One of the film's most appealing protagonists, Travis, is played to perfection by actor Robert De Niro.

Cab Driver is Quentin's all-time favorite film, and he praised Martin Scorsese's "boom" in filmmaking and his creative power between the mid-'70s and '80s.

02

Sorcerer(1977)

Director: William Friedkin

图片

Quentin recommends "Sorcerer" as his favorite William Friedkin film. William Friedkin is an accomplished filmmaker who has directed films such as "French Drug Network" and "The Exorcist".

"Sorcerer" is a remake of the classic French thriller "The Wages of Fear", which was adapted into the film "A Dangerous Path" in 1958. The story follows a group of men who receive a tense and exciting assignment when they are sent to transport a truck full of nitroglycerine through the jungles of South America.

03

Dunkirk (2017)

Director: Christopher Nolan

图片

Nolan's 2017 World War II film "Dunkirk" made Quentin's #2 list of the best films of the 2010s. As a director who insists on using live action, Quentin appreciates Nolan's rigor in trying to present war scenes as realistically as possible. Dunkirk maintains a consistent and tense pace throughout the film, with a well-designed soundscape that heightens the tension.

04

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly(1966)

Director: Sergio Leone

图片

Sergio Leone's work had a great influence on Quentin's work. Quentin has a love for Italian westerns, one of his favorites being "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America also had an important influence on Quentin. Along with Black Sabbath and The Two Stooges vs. Frankenstein, Quentin considers The Three Golden Darters to be one of the three films that had the greatest impact on his filmmaking. Featuring Ennio Morricone's impressive soundtrack and the climactic "showdown" scene, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is the perfect conclusion to the "Darts" trilogy.

05

The Social Network (2010)

Director: David Fincher

图片

When Quentin selected his personal favorite film of the last decade, David Fincher's "The Social Network" topped the list. The Social Network will be known and remembered as a great movie.

Of the film, Quentin said: "The Social Network is the number one favorite because it is the best ...... It overwhelmingly beats all the films in its genre." Quentin has great respect for David Fincher and recommends his other films, such as 1999's Fight Club.

06

His Girl Friday(1940)

Director: Howard Hawks

图片

His Girl Fridayis the second Howard Hawks film on the 'Quentin's Favorite Movies' list. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell work seamlessly together in this film, which is the pinnacle of the "absurdist comedy" sub-genre.

The film has one of the best scripts of its time and delivers a great performance through two actors at the top of their game. The dialogue in "His Girl Friday" is so sharp and fast-paced that audiences are often left wondering how the actors developed such fluency with their lines.

07

The Great Escape (1963)

Director: John Sturges

图片

Quentin recommended The Great Escape, a World War II film directed by John Sturges and starring Steve McQueen. Quentin's own World War II film,Inglourious Basterds, undoubtedly drew inspiration from The Great Escape.

Steve McQueen, and The Great Escape itself, also appear in Quentin's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and influence the film's plot.

The Great Escape features a number of talented actors such as James Garner, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, and many others. These talented actors came together to give the audience a lasting impression of a group of men trying to escape in a prisoner of war camp in Nazi Germany.

08

Dazed and Confused(1993)

Director: Richard Linklater

图片

Quentin has repeatedly expressed his love for the "Hangout Movie". The "Hangout Movie" is a genre of films that are usually light-hearted, laid-back, and about everyday life, creating an atmosphere of relaxation and freedom by showing the interpersonal relationships and daily chores between characters.

Quentin considers the films "Jackie Brown" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" as his contributions to this sub-genre. And Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" is a fairly competitive contender in this genre. The Young and the Restless transports the viewer to a perfectly realized time and space setting and presents a lighthearted slice of the day in the lives of a group of likable protagonists.

09

Carrie (1976)

Director: Brian De Palma

图片

As an avid fan of Brian De Palma's work, Quentin recommends the 1976 film "Carrie," based on Stephen King's novel. Carrie is a horror movie in which the iconic prom scene is enough to secure its status.

Over the years, Quentin has used a number of stylistic elements from Brian De Palma's work as homages in his own work, none more notable than the iconic split-screen shot.

Of course, there are many other adaptations of this classic Stephen King horror story, but in terms of cinematic style, "Carrie" perfectly showcases Brian De Palma's directorial visionary abilities in terms of filming and editing.

10

Rio Bravo(1959)

Director: Howard Hawks

图片

During Quentin's career, he spoke highly of "Rio Bravo" in many interviews. Director Howard Hawks is often hailed as one of the great pioneers of the art of cinema.

He is at his directorial best in this light-hearted western. John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Ricky Nelson make an unforgettable trio in this "hangout movie" disguised as a Western.

11

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Director: Francis Ford Coppola

图片

Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now is a film that Quentin has always loved and is deeply engraved in his mind.

Apocalypse Now directly inspired Quentin's use of the dog crossing the screen in the ranch scene of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which skillfully builds tension. Apocalypse Now is one of cinema's great achievements. If you've never taken the time to watch this war epic, it's time to catch up.

12

Sudden Attack: The Killing Fist(1974)

Director: Shigehiro Ozawa

图片

Shinichi Chiba played a street fighter in the first film of the 1970s Japanese martial arts series, which also included "Killer Fist 2" and "The Street Fighter Counterattacks" and its spin-off film "The Return of the Female Sure Shot Fist".

These films have a permanent and special place in Quentin's filmography, with related action fight scenes in "True Romance," written by Quentin and directed by Tony Scott.

Quentin also brought Shinichi Chiba into his own cinematic universe in Kill Bill Part II, where Shinichi Chiba played the infamous role of Hattori Hanzo.

13

Switchblade Sisters(1966)

Director: Jack Hill

图片

Switchblade Sistersis one of Quentin's favorite violent films. The film was released under the label of Quentin's own distribution company, Rolling Thunder Pictures (which has existed for only four years), and was designed to attract a new generation of fans to this little-known girl gangster film.

The film may have multiple different titles in different territories and different versions. The Jezebels, Playgirl Gang, Maggie's Stiletto Sisters, and even The Warriors II.Switchblade Sisterswas an "inferior" film and an unsuccessful box office success, but there is no denying that it gave audiences a fun time.

14

Django (1966)

Director: Sergio Corbucci

图片

Quentin's own film "Django Unchained" shows his love for Italian-style Westerns. The title is a tribute to the classic Django, directed by Italian director Sergio Corbucci in 1966. Franco Nero, who played the lead role of Django in the original film, makes a cameo appearance in Quentin's film.

It is said that as many as 30 unofficial sequels to the original Django film exist, but only one, Django Strikes Again/Django 2, sees Franco Nero reprise the iconic role. So it's rare to see Franco Nero in Django Unchained again.

15

Tom Yum Goong(2005)

Director: Prachia Pinckelao

图片

Sometimes Quentin's name appears alongside DVD and Blu-ray versions of films in what is known as the "Quentin Recommends" series. This label acts as a sort of "Quentin seal of approval" and provides a promotional boost for lesser-known, often non-English language films, helping them to appeal to a wider audience.

One of these films is "Tom Yum Goong". It can't be overstated how good Tony Jaa is in "Tom Yum Goong". The stunts and fights are impressive. His prowess was shown more in the movie "The Fighter". Some other great martial arts movies have also been pushed by Quentin, such as "Hero" and "Iron Monkey".

16

The Host(2006)

Director: Bong Joon-ho

图片

Bong Joon-ho's Korean monster movie "The Host" is one of Quentin's favorite movies of recent years. "The Host" is certainly a strong contender for "Best Monster Movie of All Time". Although the film, released in 2006, is almost 20 years old, its special effects and spectacular scenes still stand out from most of the competition to this day.

Bong Joon-ho has cited Quentin as a source of inspiration, citing him as a strong voice supporting his films before he had global success. Quentin has also recommended other films directed by Bong Joon-ho, such as his 2003 detective thriller "Memories of Murder".

17

Rolling Thunder(1977)

Director: Paul Schrader / John Flynn

图片

Quentin loved "Rolling Thunder" so much that he paid homage to it several times in his own films. A violent action film about a recently returned Vietnam veteran who goes out for revenge, "Rolling Thunder" has a script directed by the great Paul Schrader that provides compelling support for the carnage.

The film was titled Rolling Thunder in English, and from 1995 to 1999, Quentin had his own film distribution company, which he named Rolling Thunder Pictures. Tarantino also expressed his love for "Rolling Thunder" to his listeners during an appearance on the Empire Magazine podcast with director Edgar Wright.

18

There Will Be Blood(2007)

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

图片

Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson respect each other and have conducted many long interviews or podcast-like conversations over the years.

Although their film styles are very different, they have much in common, such as their love of 70mm film (Quentin used 70mm film in his filmThe Hateful Eight, and Paul Thomas Anderson used 70mm film for most of his scenes in his film The Master).

Quentin recommendsThere Will Be Bloodand considers its protagonist, Daniel Day-Lewis, to be a highly attractive character.

19

Blow out(1981)

Directed by Brian De Palma

图片

Quentin is a die-hard Brian De Palma fan. He once called Palmer the greatest director of his generation and referred to the film "Blow Out" as his best work.

Blow Outis Brian De Palma at his best, with a gripping plot and great performances from not only John Travolta, but also Nancy E. and John Lithgow.

In the video club section, Quentin chose "Blow Out" as one of his three "desert island movies" and praised John Travolta's excellent performance.

20

Battle Royale(2000)

Director: Shinji Fukasaku

图片

Battle Royale is a violent action movie whose influence and legacy runs deep. Traces of this film's inspiration can even be seen in other film productions. The film is worth tracking down, and Quentin's esteem for it can even be seen on the cover of the Blu-ray disc.

When Quentin took over hosting the Sky Movies channel in 2009, he began by introducing his favorite films since he became a filmmaker, and the top of the list turned out to be the Japanese action thriller Battle Royale.

Quentin has said that this movie is the work he wants to direct himself, and it is because of the performance of the actress Chiaki Kuriyama in "Battle Royale" that Quentin finally decided to choose her to play the role of Gogo in "Kill Bill Vol.1".
