Popular, bold, and colorful, Yutaro Mineyama is active in the new generation as an art director, graphic designer, and artist. born in Akita Prefecture in 1987, he founded SPONG Design Studio in 2020 and has worked extensively in the fields of record sleeves, photo books, brochures, logo design, illustration, and art events.
Yutaro Mineyama initially studied architecture at an architecture school. He was first introduced to graphic design when he needed to create his own design concept files. Thinking about how to effectively present designs and how to convey the appeal of his work to others is when he first encountered the appeal of graphic visual systems. As a result, Mineyama realized how interesting graphic design was and decided to switch tracks from architecture into the graphic field.
After graduating from university, he studied design from scratch at a specialized school and worked at the Japanese design firm Enlightenment under the tutelage of Hikaru Sugiyama. Since then, the daily accumulation has been the axis of the current design. "One of the things I remember and cherish very much is drawing every day.
"Enlightenment is not only a general design agency, but also an agency that also produces artworks, so I go back and forth between design and art (painting). Design and painting are similar but different, but people who are good at painting are always good at design. Painting every day will make design more free." Mineyama said.
Talking about technology, he said, "I am more interested in old techniques and methods. I digest and reconstruct these old expressions in my own way to create my works. So I'm not very familiar with the latest technologies. But the technological developments in AI in recent years have been amazing. Let's just say it's really amazing and I also find it interesting because the composition is in a way that I can hardly imagine. In the future, I may create new works in my own way by collaborating with AI."
Referring to the work "Co-creative shape CO LIVING NEW YANKEE NO TAMUROBA", Mr. Mineyama said, "This work is a shared space design jointly planned by YADOKARI Co. Ltd. and the architectural studio AKINAI GARDEN STUDIO. One of the main themes of the project is 'a place where new young people who break with the traditional values of society can gather', and the tenants here are limited to one year. During this period, they interact with each other, grow and graduate." When he received the project, Mineyama thought it might be interesting to break the established values of the existing space itself, so he came up with a bold idea: "Is it possible to bring the words found here into this space in the form of Xuyue style (glued text), so that they can use these words as a sign of life." As a result, Mineyama filled the space with similar words of encouragement for others in life, such as "unfinished," "better to say than to do," and "go ahead and try. "These words can be seen as art while serving as a logo. The Shuue body (tape text) was commissioned from its designer Shuue Sato using tape, and the arrangement in the space was designed by me. Even now, all the fun and thoughtful young people can gather in this space and see these words."
At the same time, Mineyama also feels, "There is a lot of good design among young designers, designers of the same age and students nowadays, and the level of design is generally very high. (Based on the current era) there are a lot of opportunities to be seen on social networking sites, and whether the design is good or bad, it can be shown. I think the necessary qualities for designers are the same in any profession, such as a down-to-earth heart and a hard-working attitude. If you work hard with your feet on the ground, you can create designs that will impact others in your own way, whether your drawing skills are good or bad, your taste is good or bad, and whether your designs are good or bad."
