"Fiber is the general term for all linearly oriented matter." If this concept is extended to fiber-based art, then linear carrier art should be able to bring a broader expansion to fiber art. Since the Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art was held in 2013, the theme of each edition has been quite forward-looking and inspiring. After the exploration of fiber as a vision, "weaving" as the main concept, and breaking boundaries and limitations, this year's fourth Triennial is themed "Cache in / Being Theoria". Being Theoria" is the theme of this year's 4th Triennial, which is divided into nine sections and two venues (Zhejiang Art Museum and Hangzhou Museum) to give a new interpretation to fiber art.
>Video of the "Fiber - The Cause of Everything" section: villagers making rattan stools in Manonghan, Xishuangbanna
More than 60 artists from more than a dozen countries and regions were organized by the curatorial team under the concept of "cache in", breaking away from the traditional concept of fiber artworks. Emphasizing the form and existence of art, rather than the work itself or the work alone, is the intention of "caching in", and the curators point out that "unlike the stable and hard material existence of real life", art "as a unique act and product of imagination" is "a unique form of art. In the "cache space" of the exhibition, he hopes to "hook and capture In the "cache space" of the exhibition, he hopes to "hook and capture the broad understanding of art and creation contained in 'fiber in the broad sense'."
>Images from the "Fibers - The Cause of Everything" section: Bark paper from Manzao, Xishuangbanna
The exhibition is divided into "All Things - Fiber Causes", "Text", "Thread/Strand", "Thread/Myanmar", "Synthesis" and "Weaving". "Synthesis," "Weaving," "Net," "Knotted Tales," and "Pure Cause "Rather than the division of the exhibition into nine units, these are some of the ideas that lead us to understand the works on display, just like fibers, different weaving methods and choices can produce different styles of fabrics. "A series of images, documents, and installations formed by Bai Qingwen's field research on various fibers, together present the process of fibers from plant prototypes to the final form of making things, which is also a microcosm of the development of human civilization. From bark to paper, from cow hair to tents, from mulberry leaves to brocade, from bushes to baskets, these crystals of human wisdom are the result of "fiber" extraction and reorganization. In the review of the development of "fiber", the exhibition opens up a kaleidoscope of artistic creation with "fiber" as a clue/leader.
>"Lineage", Ann Hamilton, long text made of tangled balls, books, wood, fabric, 2022
"Through the re-creation of fibers, we see ties forming text-like patterns, paper pulp and cotton rope reworking monument board knotted ropes, coiled paper with words, and translucent veils deconstructing poetic strokes, etc. With the help of fibers of different materials, this part of the work re-enacts the culture of civilization that mankind has built with This part of the work reinterprets the culture of human civilization united by words. Also connected is the exploration and understanding of the vast starry sky, "We begin to trace a conceptual universe that spans thousands of years and is still permeated in the details of daily life and language" (in the curator's words), the starlight lines corresponding to walking trajectories, the concentric circles shown by the rotation of the earth and the rotation of the stars, the transformation of light perceived in the darkness, the magnetism of air currents and gravity. The works in the "thread/string" unit are "fibers" that embody movement and flow under the association of the universe and the stars.
>"Book Not Book" and "One Thousand Years Later", Shi Hui, mixed media, 2021
In the "Og/Myanmar" section, which explores human emotions and relationships, topics such as women, interpersonal relationships, people and the environment, and epidemics are explored. "The "Variety" section brings together the largest number of artists' works, touching on a wide range of fiber materials, such as artificial leather, silk, silk, metal, hair, bamboo, paper and cotton, as well as the integrated use of multiple fibers. The works show not only the artists' control of materials, tools and techniques, but also their exploration of reality, humanistic concern and spiritual reflection.
>Flight Path", Alice Kate, fabric printing and embroidery, cotton, metallic and rayon threads, 2022
"Weaving" is a basic action of fiber making, and in the "Weaving" section, video-based works present a series of narratives about fabrics and people, including a semi-fictional cocoon narrative video, a record of the work of carpet weavers and sewers in Xinjiang, and a video of the rise and fall of the textile industry in Shanghai to Hong Kong. The rise and fall of the Shanghai textile industry to Hong Kong, the labor struggle behind "A Flower Towel", the archaeology of weaving technology and the future of 5G algorithm ...... these images together weave the story behind "fiber". The "Net" unit interprets the network that concentrates and connects resources, and together with "Weaving", they support the people, events and objects behind the surface, but emphasize the comprehensive use of new media technology and the mechanical nature of computer technology: the launch and winding of silk threads in zero gravity. The test performance, the history of textile production mapped by electronic devices and cotton thread, the sound installation made of alpaca wool and copper wire, and the interactive video installation made of various materials bring another layer of interpretation to the theme.
>"With Our Hair", Annette Meshajer, synthetic hair, various objects, black packaging, acrylic paint, 2013-2015
"Knotted Tales Painting" and "Pure Cause" at Hangzhou Museum are both thematic art projects. The former is based on a collaborative project between the China Academy of Art and the Manchester School of Art, while the latter is inspired by the remains of the stone pagoda at Jinyin Temple. The "Growing House" uses boxes, threads and fabrics to construct the members' creative space; Alice Kate's three sewing fabrics explore local culture and climate issues with the keyword "connection"; and the "One Ton Renewable Pond Project" by the Eight Immortals group recycles fiber materials. The "One Ton Pond Project" by the Eight Immortals group recycled fiber materials, and the interactive project exploring the relationship between fibers and the body by the Weaving Jue Cong group, all of which reflected the dynamic creativity of the artists from different perspectives. The special works under the theme of "Pure Cause" also show another kind of imagination and creativity: Chen Zhe's sundial-like work "Stargazer" echoes the base of the stone pagoda of the Pure Cause Temple; Liao Fei's "Repeated Chanting until Disappearance" is his reflection on the daily chanting of sutras after visiting the site; Wang Xu's fabricated pottery and rotating installation image is a tribute to the vacancy at the center of the stone pagoda; Xie Xie's work is a tribute to the vacancy at the base of the stone pagoda. In the public space of the museum, there are also five groups of works by Yu Ji, Wu Ding, Nabiki and others in "dialogue" with them. In the public space of the museum, there are also five groups of works by Yu Ji, Wu Ding, Nabiki and others in "dialogue" with them, while Wan Zhenyu's "Ether Home" is a "transoceanic connection" with faint thoughts and connections; Wu Shanzhuan and Inger Svala Tostotil's "Bracket Image" series is a dialogue and echo about Buddha statues and their elements. ......
> Exhibition site: "Everything-Fiber Karma" unit
The entire exhibition is poetically planned and presented with "fiber" as the connecting thread, and "cache in" softly gives the theme and works an open space for extension, so that fiber art has more possibilities. With the concept of "fiber" as the link, the Triennial brings together various seemingly sparse but tough artistic creations and organically weaves them into a new "cache in".
