Grimshaw's first permanent Eden project outside the UK has completed the steelwork of its centrepiece, The Storm Forest Biome, marking a milestone in the project's construction schedule. The single-space biome structure forms a planting space of over 27,000 square metres, making it larger in scale than the dome of the Eden project in Cornwall. The project sees water as the 'bloodline of nature, culture and civilisation'.

Following the completion and commissioning of the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, Grimshaw Associates worked with the Eden Project Group to design the Eden Project Qingdao Campus. The project is built on a devastated site in Jiaozhou Bay, which has been used for salt production and shrimp farming. The Stormwater Jungle Ecology Pavilion will showcase the atmospheric water cycle on a large scale, thus providing visitors with an immersive environment to recognise how this cycle affects people and the planet.

From drops of water to storms, from extreme drought to abundant rain, the park is equipped with different interactive installations that not only explore the different forms of water, but also the diverse relationship between water and nature. At the Rainstorm Jungle Ecology, visitors will explore the diversity of nature by walking through clouds, waterfalls, rocks, rainforests and caves. In addition to the Rainstorm Jungle Ecotarium, the project also features other parks. For example, the Extremes Zone showcases extreme climatic conditions and the Quality Zone, a mist theatre surrounded by meadows and wetlands, offers a wealth of live entertainment.

The Eden Qingdao project is the first project to follow the company's decision to expand to all continents and will be the first permanent Eden project outside of the UK. The first Eden project to be designed outside of Cornwall is the Sustainable Pavilion for Dubai Expo 2020. The new Grimshaw office sites in Morecambe and Dundee, UK, will open the following year.
