The Can bordoy - grand house & garden, designed by OHLAB, is an example of a design that reflects a cultural understanding and an attitude towards life through visual representation. It is located in the old town of Mallorca, Spain, close to the main church of Palma, the Almudena Palace and several ancient ruins. The hotel building itself has a history of over 500 years, having undergone dynastic changes and the evolution of artistic genres, and contains a fluid Spanish culture in this 2,500 square meter space. Without avoiding the original eclectic style of the building, the hotel designers used modern design to connect the multiple historical imprints present, giving the house a new function and meaning by optimizing the relationship between spatial structure and materials. As a result, the Hotel Campo Doy Garden was selected for the 2022 European Best Hotel Design Award.

Unlike the common "back garden", the Campo D'Oy Hotel brings the garden forward, connecting the building to the street, with a pleasant green landscape and simple, modern lounge seating that is open to the community and shared with the public. A staggering array of Mediterranean plants connects the indoor and outdoor spaces and even introduces them into the restaurant, providing a relaxed and enjoyable holiday atmosphere throughout. The design of the hotel garden is not a respectful pile-up and arrangement of bright plants with traces of time; only by introducing the local culture and its living wisdom into it can we create a garden hotel with artistic charm.

If the design of the hotel garden is open to the current fashion, the renovation of the hotel building is the inclusion of the ancient charm of history. Materials for architecture not only need to meet the function of use, but also convey a specific spatial aura. The hotel design is more careful in material selection and matching, from the level of perceptual art, the materials in the environment convey the management spirit and service purpose of the hotel. In the design of Campo D'Oy Garden Hotel, it was a challenging task to maintain the coexistence of old and new materials, and to match hard and soft materials, OHLAB took "texture" as a breakthrough, and through the transition of different materials to reflect the strength, weight, complexity and simplicity, a flexible and open room pattern was formed, and an original living style. For example, the sink and shower facilities in the guest room are not relegated to an enclosed compartment, but are displayed in the room like decorative objects, so that the privacy of dressing and washing is dissolved and the daily behavior is integrated into the environmental art. The designers also added a track to the ceiling with a minimalist structure and hung velvet curtains to complete the function of soft partitioning of the space, and some of the rooms even use a circular ring curtain to enclose the bed.

Different materials complete the decorative function of the hotel environment in a straightforward way and with their own textures. Artificial details and elaborate carvings are barely visible in the classical aesthetic tone, and the geometric composition of the assembled forms exudes modernity and elegance, reflecting the designer's respect for the environment and natural beauty. At the same time, the roughness revealed by this natural form also adds a touch of wildness to the hotel's comfortable and elegant atmosphere, a wildness that creates drama and stories for the space and immerses people physically and mentally.

In line with the hotel's design vision of blending old and new elements, owner Mikael Hall brought in his private collection of classic antique paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries to decorate the space, and worked with OHLAB to select furniture and handcrafted items from local antique stores in Mallorca. It took more than two years of searching for European antiques in Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Istanbul, and finally combining these antique furniture from different eras, origins and styles with contemporary furniture in the hotel in a natural way.

In addition to the hotel's comprehensive construct of concrete walls, marble countertops, solid wood floors, giant glass, velvet curtains, and leather sofas and brass table lamps, the designer added light design, restructuring the texture and order of the space with the light and darkness of light. The shape and position of the lamps are carefully defined, and the shape, scale, warmth and coolness of the light are carefully matched. For example, the quiet bedroom features a plain frosted shade that emits a restrained, brief, and subdued light, while the welcoming parlor features a magnificent chandelier with crystal accents that refract light into dynamic polka dots reflecting on the walls and ceiling. There seems to be an invisible grid in the hotel, in which the black and white relationship created by the light is harmoniously spread out.

Although the various table lamps, standing lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces and wall sconces in the Campo Doy Garden Hotel have been designed to provide a seamless arrangement of light, the designers did not rest on their laurels. The use of mirrored reflective materials makes the appearance of light even more unexpected and surprising. The ceiling above the bartending counter is replaced with glass, mirroring the wide array of wine bottles and glasses on the wine cabinet overhead, so that drinkers can get "drunk" before they drink. The inside finish and steps of the zigzag staircase are made of wood, while the outside of the guardrail is covered with bright stainless steel, and as the steps go back and forth, the guardrail reflects a strange space scene, familiar and strange, real and fantastic, although in reality, like entering an illusionary realm. Above the staircase, a skylight is deliberately reserved on the roof of the hotel, embedded in the entire glass, and combined with the pool, allowing the Mallorcan sky and clouds to become the hotel's flowing skylight mural through the pool water.

The Campo D'Oy Garden Hotel has a fascinating history and iterative architectural pattern, which the designers transformed into a design motive, transforming a small hotel with only 24 rooms into a fantastic space with multiple eras.
