Today, I would like to introduce to you a public space installation artist - Eric Rieger. Also known as HOTTEA, he collects loose threads to create monumental large-scale installations in public spaces.
The pieces hang from the ceiling with seemingly innumerable lines, enveloping the spaces in which they sit in vibrant hues—all of which seem to have a mind of their own. Each thread is untethered and able to move freely with the breeze.
The installations are "bespoke" for a specific place, and are often influenced by Eric Rieger's own experiences, memories or connections to a place. One, titled "Strangers," comes after the artist reflected on the kindness of people while creating a 100-foot-long, 30-foot-wide installation in Belo Horizonte, Brazil created.
"The word 'stranger' usually carries a negative connotation, and I named this installation 'The Stranger' because I like the idea of talking about strangers as a positive thing." -----Eric Rieger
As a public space installation, "non-destructive" is the most important feature of art installations. Eric Rieger's large, densely colored installations dominated by yarn are in the form of graffiti, using the grid inherent in the fence to secure the installation.
Large-scale art installations of his type have been invited to showcase his art across the United States and internationally, with exhibitions in London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.
