Artist Abbas Zahedi
London-born installation artist Abbas Zahedi has been named the recipient of the 2022 Frieze Artist Award. His work "Waiting With {Sonic Support}" will be placed in a location near the entrance to the Frieze fair in London for viewers to see for the first time. Abbas's piece, a wooden building reminiscent of a bus shelter, will be the venue for a series of live events that will be broadcast live online and within the fair via "DIY Radio".

Zahedi, 38, is a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and a collaborating artist at the Barbican Centre in London. He initially studied medicine at University College London and in 2019 obtained a MA in Contemporary Photography at Central Saint Martins. He then followed up with a practice at South London Gallery in 2019-20, during which he created How to Make A How from A Why? 2021, Thailand The Art Gallery houses one of his installations and sound works. Abbas' work emphasizes how personal and collective histories are intertwined, and he connects as much as possible with those involved in the specific situations he focuses on.

Established in 2013, the Frieze Artist Award is an art prize launched by Frieze Projects, which has been awarded for the past four years in partnership with London-based contemporary art organisation Forma. The awards provide UK and international artists with the opportunity to complete and present their work at Frieze. The Frieze Artist Prize focuses on young artists and artists who are on the rise in their artistic careers, and applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 40. Past recipients include Himali Singh Soin (2019), Alberta Whittle (2020) and Sung Tieu (2021). This year's applicants were asked to consider sustainability related to their work and their installations. To create his winning installation, Zahedi will rely on reusable and sustainably sourced materials and will focus on the least disruptive installation process.
