James Casebere

James Casebere(b. 1953) is an American visual artist whose early work put him at the forefront of artists working in architectural photography. For nearly 40 years, Casebere has designed simple and complex tabletop models and photographed them in his own studio.

Visual artist James Casebere has been building architectural models and photographing them since the mid-1970s, creating images somewhere between realism and pure fabrication.

El Eco Courtyard, 2017

The New York-based artist has worked with abandoned spaces, recreating the relationship between photography, architecture and sculpture in miniature form on the tabletop. A series of his works titled "Emotional Architecture", shown at Sean Kelly Gallery in New York, uses the feeling of confinement to create spaces where viewers get lost in their own thoughts. His tabletop models mimic the appearance of architectural institutions or common sites, representing the structures that occupy our everyday world.

For his new series, Casebere reconstructed parts of Luis Barragán's large-scale buildings by building accurate models. By using plaster, Styrofoam and cardboard, he dramatically ignites these miniature interiors before photographing them, creating surreal and very realistic pictures.

For each model, Casebere eliminated detail and illuminated with dramatic lighting effects, so he was able to transform familiar home spaces and find the extraordinary in everyday life. His photographs are stripped of color and detail to evoke a feeling of emotion rather than the physicality of the form of a place. Casebere's purpose was to focus on the memories and feelings that come from the architectural spaces he represents.

This is an early series of works by James Casebere, in which he mainly presents surreal domestic scenes and claustrophobic vistas, evocative building interiors and building-type exterior spaces.

Merely exposing the psychopathology of an everyday life, creating a simulacrum that modifies and tampers reality, Casebere's scenes are deeply ambiguous yet politically oriented, documenting our time by conveying a disturbing image of space and landscape. Casebere's photographs are stripped of colour and detail to evoke an emotional rather than a physical sense of the form of a place, with the aim of focusing on the memories and feelings that come with the architectural spaces he represents.

For more than four decades, Casebere has explored the fictional possibilities of photography, testing the true nature of his media hypotheses to prove the fiction of reality. His work is both poetic and political, creating lifelike portraits that expose what American historian Hal Foster has called "the psychopathology of everyday life."
