Documenta is a contemporary art exhibition held every five years in the city of Kassel, Germany. The main exhibition hall is the Museum Fridericianum. It was founded by Arnold Bode in 1955 as part of the then Bundesgartenschau in Kassel, where documenta was held in an attempt to bring Germany up to date with modern art. pace, while expelling and suppressing cultural darkness. The exhibition period of each documenta is limited to 100 days. Documenta 15 raises questions about transparency, accountability and creative freedom.

Unlike previous documenta editions, the artistic director appointed in 2022 is a collective, ruangrupa, rather than an individual curator. The Jakarta-based nonprofit is dedicated to promoting the idea of art in a variety of contexts through an interdisciplinary approach, combining art with social sciences, politics, technology, and more. In this spirit, they built Documenta's core values and philosophy on the Indonesian word for "shed" (lumbung) - first inviting five collaborators to become an art team, then together they recruited 14 collectives, organizations and initiatives to become "Lumbung Member". Each member group subsequently hired more groups, many of which then used their budgets to invite others to join their process. The result is a vast network of collective art and social practice activating the 32 venues and public spaces that make up the 100-day temporary festival. In other words, it's a far cry from any kind of well-curated, fixed exhibition.

Throughout the venue, social practice-based projects take centre stage, with collective presentations of documentation from previous events as well as live programming. A particular highlight is the Nhá Sàn Collective gardens at the WH22 site. Here, Vietnamese groups are cultivating migratory plant species in gardens built with the resources and contributions of Vietnamese immigrants in Germany, and they can also donate or request to receive seeds from a "seed bank" located in a wooden shed. Meanwhile, in a room on the ground floor, three dancers were improvising as part of a programme hosted by the Niger Foundation Music Festival in Mali. They are standing next to a huge sphere made of clay bricks and surrounded by clay bricks. This provides an obvious path for "offices" installed in adjacent rooms. Here, representatives of the Jatiwangi Art Factory in Indonesia provided information on the destruction of village structures and the industrialization of agriculture, including deforestation. Visitors are invited to purchase a 4x4m plot of land in an effort to create the world's first collectively owned forest, the land will no longer be available to developers.

In addition, there are a number of noteworthy projects located in Calso State Park. Finding the project of the Argentine group La Intermunial Holobiente on the site of the compost pile is a task in itself, and when rounding the corner and through some trees into the clearing, the scene is stunning: a translucent flag with trees painted on it, in the breeze , floating among the trees, supported by two giant white helium balloons. Beyond that, a small wooden trailer holds a book written by 14 other artists and writers, as well as non-human collaborators. Walk around piles of beetle-infested tree trunks in a nearby greenhouse, while the soundscape of the Colombian rainforest echoes throughout, part of a larger project hosted by Latin American group Más Arte Más Acción . Elsewhere in the park is Nest Collective's (Return to Sender, 2021/2022), an installation made of trash: e-waste has been sorted by colour into single-coloured freestanding cubes, while discarded textiles are tightly packed Bundle and stack to create a shell. Nest Collective's installation is an outstanding example of the few aesthetic, static pieces that exist primarily within a living, evolving thing. Return to Sender – Delivery Details, 2022 is a documentary-style video of Nairobi, Kenya, where Nest Collective is based, of feeling indignant while wearing second-hand clothing and other social and economic roles. Together, the three projects talk about the transfer of problems from the North to the South and the consequences of this destructive approach.

Elsewhere, Port-au-Prince-based organization Atis Rezistans | Ghetto Biennial has created site-specific sculptures and installations that transform the early 20th-century Roman Catholic church St Kunigundis into a reflection on global class politics, Haitian history and folklore in the art world, and places where the spirit of cooperation is insufficient. Apart from the accompanying program of performances, screenings and discussions, the intervention itself is like a well-curated exhibition.

These practical projects give such autonomy and ample space. The 100-day festival has a lively, inspiring spirit and invites audiences to fully engage, reorienting their perception of what art is and can be.
