The Oslo Architecture Triennial, organized by the Oslo School of Architecture, the Norwegian School of Design and Architecture and a number of other professional institutions, opened on September 22. The exhibition has been held for eight consecutive years, reflecting local urban planning, architectural design and habitat in Northern Europe. The theme of this year's exhibition, "Neighborhood Mission," is defined by chief curator Christian Pagh as giving meaning to the social and physical dimensions of the things people share on a daily basis. Especially at this time of the new pneumonia pandemic, a good neighborhood will undoubtedly have a positive impact on people's life health and quality of life. This year's Oslo Architecture Triennial addresses this issue of living and living in a more sustainable way.

A "neighborhood" can be described on the one hand as the sum of the places we encounter and share with others in our daily lives. These places include streets, squares, bus stops, as well as kindergartens, schools, stores and workplaces. The concept of "neighborhood" suggests not only the physical environment in which people live, but also the social content associated with it. In the curatorial team's architectural vision, "neighborhoods" provide a better living environment for people, using the improvement of the physical space as an entry point to direct social processes, frameworks and cultures towards the continuous dissolution of tensions. Compared with the development orientation that prioritizes individual living experience, the choice of bringing people back to neighborhood life and promoting positive interactions among people has become more and more relevant to the development needs of the times.

This year's Triennial includes three important exhibition projects. "Oslo Neighborhood Lab", which tells the story of the past and reshapes the future of the neighborhood with three exhibitions at the Munch Museum; "Into the Community", which responds to the concerns of minority groups in the neighborhood; and "Elements of Consideration = Observation, Dialogue and Action, which explores different possibilities for sharing the neighborhood environment through artistic means.

The Munch Art Museum in Oslo, Norway, has a daily display of works and materials by painter Edvard Munch, including the world-famous painting The Scream. The "Neighborhood Lab" project took place here during the Triennial of Architecture. The program consists of three exhibitions. The first is the core exhibition of the Triennial, named after the Triennial's theme: "Neighborhood Mission - (Re)Building Community". This exhibition responds to the challenge of how to face the dissolution of the meaning of social behavior and spatial field between neighbors in our time. In the related activities, the curatorial team and the exhibitors, through different ways, present their concerns about the cultural issues of the current community. For example, the lack of cultural and social infrastructure, gathering places, and local style and flavor in many new urban areas; the public sector's desire to engage the public and urban communities to a greater extent in the construction of neighborhoods and to seek ways to be more culturally relevant in urban development; and the desire to find concrete, community-oriented alternatives to investor- and developer-driven urban development.

The Munch's second exhibition, "Peter Cook: Urban Visions and Explorations in Oslo," begins with the results of architect Peter Cook's local urban and architectural explorations of Oslo. The exhibition is centered on Peter Cook's urban and architectural drawing manuscripts. These manuscripts envision new urban forms and how the natural landscape and the mixture of architecture and vegetation contribute to the future of this delightful city. Innovative ideas of the city are applied to Oslo's neighborhoods, showing how imagination and technology can bring more possibilities to the city while making the environment a more interesting and surprising framework for living.

The third exhibition, "Oslo in Construction", presents a report on the contemporary urban development of Oslo for the public. The "report" focuses on and highlights projects and practices related to the vision of the neighborhood community. As the fastest growing city in the Nordic region for decades, Oslo is an interesting and controversial example of new urban development in practice. At the same time, the "report" also contains more or less so-called "architectural protest", a professional critique of the frustrations caused by new urban construction.

Another section of the Triennial, "Into the Community," attempts to address important issues related to minorities. "What does it mean for minorities to share a sense of community?" "How are the ideas of architecture and design shaped by communities?" "What makes a space feel safe for everyone?" "Can architecture really help bring people closer together?" For minorities, the inclusiveness and diversity of neighborhood communities is a sensitive indicator. The curatorial team also created interesting interactions and concepts based on their research on minority activity spaces to make the neighborhood truly a place for everyone to live.

"Considerations = Observation, Dialogue and Action" is the section of the Oslo Architecture Triennial that is most closely linked to art. Through artistic investigation and art making, the exhibition brings more perspectives to the understanding of "neighborhoods". 16 groups of artists or art collectives focus on how art and artists see neighborhoods as the center of their field of vision, in order to rethink how we can create better spatial fields for communities in cities. Here, art is used as a creative intervention to provoke thought through narrative and creation.

As Triennial curator Christian says, "A good neighborhood is open and safe. It has a community infrastructure that allows people to come together; it offers diverse activities, expressions, and opportunities; it enables people to influence and shape their environment; and, it promotes sustainable solutions and resource sharing."

As we look around the world, we see that there are neighbors in every corner of the world, and it is a great way to recreate the vitality of the neighborhoods that people live in with the hand of architecture.
