This year's Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest honor in architecture, was awarded to 70-year-old British architect David Alan Chipperfield, an architect with a low-key, robust style whose work spans Asia, Europe and North America, and who upholds a simple, naturalistic architectural philosophy with a timeless, exquisite quality that is particularly evident in the design and renovation of museums and galleries.
In a career spanning more than forty years, David Chipperfield has created more than one hundred works covering the fields of municipal, cultural and academic architecture, and also all types of residential and urban master plans, and this award is seen by many as well deserved.
The Pritzker Prize jury commented, "Given the rigor, integrity, and pertinence that David Chipperfield has demonstrated in his work, which has transcended the field of architecture and highlights his dedication to social improvement and environmental betterment, we award him the 2023 Pritzker Prize."

For David Chipperfield, cities should pursue continuity, seeking something that can pass ideas on from generation to generation. He never follows trends, but always emphasizes the social responsibility of architecture, and confronts the connection between tradition and innovation. In his acceptance speech, he said, "I take this award as a kind of encouragement to continue to focus on the essence and meaning of architecture and to pay more attention to the contribution that architects can make in addressing the current challenges of climate change and social inequality. We know that architects have a prominent role to play in creating not only a better world, but also an equitable and sustainable world through relentless interaction and interconnectedness. We must rise above this challenge and help and inspire the next generation to have the vision and courage to take responsibility." David Chipperfield was born in London in 1953, graduated from Kingston School of Art, and went on to study architecture systematically at the Architectural League College in London. The River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames was his first architectural project in his hometown.

His subsequent overseas expansion has brought him to the forefront of the profession, with notable examples including the America's Cup building in Valencia, Spain, completed in 2006, with its staggered platform levels, and the Neues Museum in Berlin, which won the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture in 2011. The museum has survived the fires of World War II, leaving monumental "scars" on its walls, which the architects have deliberately preserved, leaving traces of old frescoes and materials used for reconstruction on both sides of the walls, and the new museum is a combination of the old and the new, creating a wonderful chemistry between modern works and ancient relics.

After opening his office in Shanghai in 2005, David Chipperfield opened a new round of architectural narratives that fuse East and West. He specializes in using local materials to make new connections between architecture and the surrounding community. David Chipperfield Architects' first project completed in China was the Liangzhu Culture Museum in Hangzhou, where he reconciled the lightness and heaviness between landscape and architecture through courtyards. In Hangzhou's Xixi Paradise - Yuezhuang, he created gray stone buildings set in a water garden, drawing on the typical residential character of the Xixi Wetland neighborhood. Every great city needs a flourishing culture and art, and in Shanghai, where the international art fair and contemporary art scene has been remarkable in recent years, David Chipperfield has established a deeper connection with local culture, from the Locke Bund Source, the West Coast Museum of Art to the Xujiahui Academy, all continuing his strong sense of mission for art and culture.

The architects preserved the southeast two walls of the typical red brick tower, restored the three-story historic façade along the street, and built a new eleven-story structure on top of it, rising to 60 meters in height, adding practical functions while preserving the original structure as much as possible.
This is reminiscent of the theme of the 2012 Venice Biennale, "Common Ideas". David Chipperfield was the curator of that year's exhibition, shifting the public's attention from grand and glamorous buildings and celebrity designers to broader themes such as urbanization, public space, social responsibility and collaboration. In his view, cities "create solidarity and collaboration between citizens," and in his architectural restoration and renovation projects, he always aims to salvage the original design and structural vision, never completely replacing it with modern architecture.

The Westbank Museum of Art is located on the northwest bank of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, with unobstructed views of the Huangpu River. "The design of the Westbank Museum reflects the openness of the site and the surrounding development along the new cultural corridor of the West Bank." David Chipperfield explains. The building's skin is made of translucent glass, visually luminous white and warm. The interior of the gallery consists of three "boxes" arranged in a rotating windmill shape, each 17 meters high, connected and independent of each other, connected by a centrally located lobby, creating a strong interstitial public space. The upper level contains galleries of varying spatial scales that take advantage of natural light, while the lower level includes a multi-purpose lobby, art studios and art education spaces. Many visitors love to stay in the gallery's waterfront promenade, enjoying the flow of the Huangpu River and the buildings on the other side of the river. The architect has allowed the museum to "grow out of the west bank" and to blend naturally into the urban fabric of Shanghai and the Huangpu River.
In recent years, the architect has expanded his practice to a broader social dimension, "doing social issues beyond design." In 2017, David Chipperfield established the RIA Foundation to sponsor and plan the future development of the landscape in Galicia, Spain. scientists, artists and philosophers, the project intends to promote local natural and built environmental conservation along the coastline in response to the challenges of climate change it faces.

David Chipperfield is currently leading the design of the expansion of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. The design team found a balance between the old and the new by "creating a pedestal that grows out of the existing building," presenting a romantic landscape on the urban grid, including the addition of two levels of underground galleries and a green park on the roof.
Modern architecture wants to witness the progress of the city, but in some ways this contradicts the pursuit of timeless architecture. David Chipperfield's architecture has been described by The Guardian as "serious, calm and unobtrusive, but always in tune with the history and culture of its surroundings". David Chipperfield always hides his architect's genius behind this fit, insisting on "walking with society".

Acceptance and attention to established realities are important building blocks to ensure that both the material and cultural aspects of what is created are sustainable. As David Chipperfield says: "The city is a record of our history, constantly accumulating and settling and coming alive, itself recording history, and it is changing every moment. We must preserve buildings of great historical significance. The unnamed buildings are documenting the shaping and accumulation of the city's personality, and thus the quality of the city."
